PLENARY OVERVIEW

What is racial reconciliation?
More importantly, how are we as a Diocese called to live out Christ’s amazing love to all?
What is the process and what are the steps for parishes to begin the journey of creating a beloved community?
What help is available to parishes?
Our plenary address will be a time for all participants to be engaged with the curriculum and goals of the Racial Reconciliation Task Force. Using the course, Difference, and the supplemental Hawaiian sessions, participants will follow the three goals of Difference: be curious, be present, and reimagine.
Be curious!  The task force will present the curriculum written so far and provide dates of training and implementation

Be present!  Thetask force will lead us through samples of the curriculum and begin the conversation of how all involved can be focused and practice active listening.

Reimagine!  This is a favorite of the task force! What do we want to see after a parish has completed the course? How can we reimagine a new day and live in a beloved community?

Afternoon Workshops:

“Cool Congregations” by Hawai’i Interfaith Power and Light (HIPL)
Picture
Hawai'i Interfaith Power and Light (HIPL) will present a session on "Cool Congregations."  Travis Idol, President of HIPL, will describe a product of the national Interfaith Power and Light organization to:
  1. help congregations calculate their energy use related to climate change;
  2. help congregations and households connect their faith and values to the demands climate change and the greenhouse effect are tragically imposing on all of us;
  3. commit to being a zero carbon church.
Churches of different sizes and resources from around the Diocese will share their own experiences of trying to become carbon neutral. Resources will be provided about Hawai'i Energy programs and photovoltaic energy installation.
The Palestinian-Israeli Conflict from a Christian Palestinian’s Perspective
Picture
Jonathan Kuttab, a well-known international lawyer, is co-founder of the Palestinian human rights group Al-Haq, and co-founder of Nonviolence International. He serves on the Board of Bethlehem Bible College and is President of the Board of Holy Land Trust.  Jonathan was the head of the Legal Committee negotiating the Cairo Agreement of 1994 between Israel and the PLO.

Kuttab is the author of a new book, Beyond the Two State Solution, in which he explains that the two-state solution is no longer viable & formulates a way forward for a one state solution where Palestinians and Israelis can live together in a unified state.

Queen Lili'uokalani
A play by Rianna Williams

Based on true information from Queen Lili'uokalani's diaries and other documented sources that took place in Washington Place (the Queen's home), Rianna Williams captures the most poignant moments in the personal life of Hawai'i's last monarch.

About the Author:  Rianna Williams has been a docent and researcher at Washington Place for 20 years.  She was also a docent and researcher at 'Iolani Palance for ten years (for the late Hawaiian historian H. J. Jim Bartels) before spending the next ten years researching and writing on her own.  During this time, she wrote five books and numerous articles on Hawaiian history, in addition to transcribing several ali'i journals onto the computer at Bishop Museum archives. Click here to learn more about Williams in an article that appeared in AMA, May/June 2022 issue.
