In 2023, the Waiolaihui'ia Center for Ministry's program expanded to include a lay formation program to license lay preachers, catechists, and worship leaders in our churches. It is a 10-month program beginning in January, with a spring and winter vacation for study. Classes are held online, so that all interested people from around the Diocese can participate. The first class to complete this program held their ceremony at the Church of the Holy Apostles in Hilo, in August 2023 (pictured below).
Interested persons discern their call, usually by consulting their priest and other church leadership. Potential students must be recommended by their priest in order to enroll in the WCM Licensed Lay Ministry program.
Currently, WCM is offering training and licensing for:
Catechists
Preachers
Worship Leaders
For the first half of the course, all students attend the same class, before making a decision on which area to branch out into. The remainder of the course is then focused on each student's chosen area of training. Licensing will be for a two-year period and can be renewed. Continuing education is encouraged.
