PLENARY PRESENTATION BY THE DIOCESAN LISTENING TEAM

What does it mean to listen? How are we transformed once we do so?
From April 2021 through June 2022, three members of Diocesan Council (Phyllis Miller, Tim Bostock, and Kim Arakawa) conducted 63 listening sessions across the Diocese with the intent of providing a grace-filled space to discover emerging concerns and innovative ideas, as well as celebrate joyful successes. The Listening Team spent time with 36 clergy and 177 lay participants who reflected and shared thoughts on seven open-ended questions centered on loss, call, support, spiritual food, identity, community, and joy.  In addition, the sessions offered participants the opportunity to wonder together – What is God Calling us to do? Who is God Calling us to be?

Since concluding the sessions, the Listening Team has analyzed the data – identifying areas of consensus on what respondents feel is working across our faith communities, where they see systemic stressors, what we, as a Diocese, may be missing or not affirming, and helpful “a-has.” The Spring Training plenary will be an opportunity for the Listening Team to share these findings and an invitation to reflect, to dialogue, to question together – what resonates, and what are our next faithful steps?
Listening Team Findings – Full Report
We are pleased to offer the following workshops.  Please select only one workshop for each session.
WORKSHOPS - SESSION I:
  1. "Walking Through the Liturgy: Why We Do What We Do" with Bishop Robert Fitzpatrick

  2. "The Portfolio and YOU: How the Diocesan Portfolio Works" with Trip Lynch, Commission on Investments - Learn how the Diocesan Portfolio works, how it is managed, and how it can build long-term future security for congregations like yours.

  3. "The Gospel Story from A Cultural Perspective" with Deacon Bob Steele, Reconciliation Task Force - This presentation by the Rev. Dcn. Bob Steele of the Reconciliation Task Force, will focus on culture.  More specifically, it will show that the Gospel story told with religious imagery from a Western, European, and American cultural perspective supports white supremacy.  Traditionally, this imagery has privileged whiteness and portrayed Jesus as a White Northern European. Deacon Steele will give a counter-voice to the Western European and American worldview by showing works by African American artists that have rejected western interpretations of the telling of the Gospel story.  Drawing from his extensive collection of African American artists, Deacon Steele will present the works of Henry O. Tanner, Alan Crite, and others.  He will also compare their art to a re-telling of the Gospel from the perspective of Sadao Watanabe, a Japanese artist, a deeply committed Christian who uses white figures in his representation of the Gospel story.
WORKSHOPS - SESSION II:
  1. "Creation Care" with the Environmental Justice & Creation Care Task Force - Come hear students from ʻIolani School's Citizensʻ Climate Lobby Club share about the Youth Climate Future Forum, their legislative priorities for 2023, and their experience lobbying at the Hawaiʻi legislature.  They will also teach us about how to advocate for certain bills, how to submit testimony, and how to take advantage of the Public Access Room.  For more information, see the Youth Climate Future Forum website HERE, or view an informational flyer HERE.

  2. "Q&A with the DSC" with the Diocesan Support Center staff - They're in the room together waiting for you to answer your questions!

  3. "How to More Effectively Communicate Financial Information to a Non-Financial Audience" with Trip Lynch, Commission on Investments
