CONVENTION 58 THEME:
​Transitions

This year's "Transitions" convention theme represents the changes that the diocese has been going through and will continue to go through as we say aloha to Bishop Bob and Bishop-elect Libby Berman "transitions" in.  The convention logo is the flame of the Holy Spirit in front of an image that represents both a sunrise and sunset; an analogy of the two careers intersecting at the horizon.  This will be Bishop Bob's final convention as Bishop Diocesan, and Bishop-Elect Libby will be introduced alongside him. Bishop Bob shares the following Collect and Lessons for Convention 58: (Click on the dropdown box links shown.)
COLLECT OF THE DAY
O God of unchangeable power and eternal light: Look favorably on your whole Church, that wonderful and sacred mystery; by the effectual working of your providence, carry out in tranquility the plan of salvation; let the whole world see and know that things which were cast down are being raised up, and things which had grown old are being made new, and that all things are being brought to their perfection by him through whom all things were made, your Son Jesus Christ our Lord; who lives and reigns with you, in the unity of the Holy Spirit, one God, for ever and ever. ECCLESIASTES 3:1-4
​For everything there is a season and a time for every matter under heaven:

​What gain have the workers from their toil? I have seen the business that God has given to everyone to be busy with. He has made everything suitable for its time; moreover, he has put a sense of past and future into their minds, yet they cannot find out what God has done from the beginning to the end. I know that there is nothing better for them than to be happy and enjoy themselves as long as they live; moreover, it is God’s gift that all should eat and drink and take pleasure in all their toil. I know that whatever God does endures forever; nothing can be added to it nor anything taken from it; God has done this so that all should stand in awe before him.

EPISTLE: I THESSALONIANS 5:12-25

Be at peace among yourselves. And we urge you, brothers and sisters, to admonish the idlers, encourage the fainthearted, help the weak, be patient with all of them. GOSPEL: JOHN 21:15-19
​This was now the third time that Jesus appeared to the disciples after he was raised from the dead. When they had finished breakfast, Jesus said to Simon Peter, “Simon son of John, do you love me more than these?” He said to him, “Yes, Lord; you know that I love you.” Jesus said to him, “Feed my lambs.” A second time he said to him, “Simon son of John, do you love me?” He said to him, “Yes, Lord; you know that I love you.” Jesus said to him, “Tend my sheep.” He said to him the third time, “Simon son of John, do you love me?” Peter felt hurt because he said to him the third time, “Do you love me?” And he said to him, “Lord, you know everything; you know that I love you.” Jesus said to him, “Feed my sheep. Very truly, I tell you, when you were younger, you used to fasten your own belt and to go wherever you wished. But when you grow old, you will stretch out your hands, and someone else will fasten a belt around you and take you where you do not wish to go.” (He said this to indicate the kind of death by which he would glorify God.) After this he said to him, “Follow me.”

OUR CONVENTION CHAPLAINS:

We are delighted to welcome the Franciscan Brothers (all of them!) from the Society of Saint Francis to serve as our Convention Chaplains. Bishop Bob has been their Bishop Protector since 2017, serving as a consultant to the Society and as a liaison between the community and The Episcopal Church.  Some of you may recall that Brother Ambrose and Brother Thomas served as chaplains for Convention 55, providing a wonderful balance of humor and reverence. 

From their website: We are vowed Franciscan Brothers in the Episcopal Church, and part of a worldwide Anglican Franciscan community.  We live together in community after the pattern of many Franciscans before us, and under vows of poverty, chastity and obedience.  Our way of life is over 800 years old, but our vision is fresh and new.  As Franciscans, we live a blended life of contemplation and active service to the most vulnerable in our communities.

Nominations

Diocesan Council:  Exercises the power of the Convention and performs planning and policy-making between meetings of Convention. Oversees the policies, programs, mission, and budget of the Diocese and may initiate new work. Also is the legal corporate body of the Episcopal Church in Hawai‘i and, as such, is responsible for the business and property of the Church. This is the Board of Directors of the Diocese. 

Standing Committee:  Serves as the Bishop’s Council of Advice. Performs duties as specified by the General and Diocesan Convention, and the Constitution and Canons of the Episcopal Church and the Diocese of Hawai‘i. Serves as the Ecclesiastical authority when there is no Bishop. 

Cathedral Chapter:  Serves as the oversight body for The Cathedral of St. Andrew (both as a congregation and as the seat of the Bishop). 

Secretary of the Convention:  Records minutes, enters them in the Journal, and, under the supervision of the Bishop, attends to the publication and distribution of the Journal, and performs other duties as prescribed in the Diocesan Constitution and Canons. Chairs the Committee on Convention Plans for planning the agenda and making physical arrangements for the Convention. Maintains various directories of Diocesan officers, commissions, departments, etc.

Registration and Credentials
  • ​Individual Registration Form​ (Online form will be available this Summer/Fall) - Registrations are transferrable 
  • Delegate Change Form -  If a Delegate that you elected in January is no longer able to attend.  Per Diocesan Canons, Sec. 2.4. In the case of failure of one or more delegates or alternates from any Parish or Mission to attend the Convention, the Rector, Vicar, or Priest-in-Charge of such congregation shall have the power to appoint alternates to replace them. In the absence of such Rector, Vicar, or Priest-in-Charge, or such person’s failure to act, the power of appointment shall fall to the Wardens in order of precedence. In the event there be no Wardens, or upon their failure to act, the power of appointment shall fall to the Bishop. Any such appointments shall be promptly
    reported to the Committee on Credentials. complete the Delegate Change Form to change an elected Alternate to an elected Delegate OR if a Delegate that you elected in January is no longer able to attend AND none of the alternates you elected are able to attend or you did not elect any alternates.
  • Changes to Alternates do not need to be reported.

​Travel Costs 
The congregations of the Diocese share the costs of travel for the lay and clergy delegates (not alternates). The below documents explain this practice and detail the cost to each congregation. 
  • Shared Travel Memo - Explains the practice of sharing travel and shows how the calculation was done. Includes a description of the procedures for arranging travel and a link to the interisland air reservation form. 
  • Shared Travel Assessment - Details the cost to each congregation and is included in the above Shared Travel Memo.

​Hotel and Ground Transportation
The Diocese does not provide funds for hotel or ground transportation.

​Nominations
  • Nominations Cover Letter -  What leadership vacancies are coming up? What type of person should the leader be? How is someone nominated? A letter to get those questions, and more, answered.
  • Nominations Office Descriptions - This document describes the functions, commitments, meetings, qualifications, etc. for vacant offices on the Diocesan Council, Standing Committee, Cathedral Chapter, and for Secretary of the Convention.  
  • Nomination Form Online - Online deadline is 11:59 pm on  September 2. Any nominations after the deadline must be made from the floor during the Annual Meeting.  One need not be present to be nominated from the floor.  However, the person must consent to be nominated.
Necrology Reporting
  • Necrology Letter -  Instructions on how to report the names of those in your congregation who died from September 1, 2025 through Aug. 31, 2026 (inclusive). 
  • Necrology Reporting Form Submission Deadline will be 11:59 pm Sept. 15 for the names to be presented.

Travel & Lodging

​AIR TRAVEL: The Diocese will cover interisland air travel expenses for voting clergy and lay delegates attending Convention 58 from neighbor islands.  All covered flights must be booked through the Diocesan Travel Coordinator.

IMPORTANT NOTE FOR THOSE PLANNING TO ARRIVE ON SATURDAY FOR THE ANNUAL MEETING: Due to the cutbacks in the Alaska/Hawaiian Airline flights, in most cases, there is only one flight available from the neighbor islands that will get you to the meeting on time. Remember, late arrivals may not be able to vote. Make your reservations with our travel coordinator ASAP!

For those planning to attend Friday's events, the later check-in times should allow for more flight selection.  Please click HERE for travel procedures.  When you have all your travel and personal information ready, you can submit the Air Travel Request online form HERE. If you are NOT a voting clergy or convention delegate, you are free to make your own airline reservations.​
LIMITED HOTEL GROUP ROOM RATES AT THE ALA MOANA HOTEL:  Although lodging is not covered by the diocese, we have secured discounted group room rates at the Ala Moana Hotel for anyone planning to attend Friday's events, or for voting clergy and lay delegates who just want the comfort of arriving the day before the Annual Meeting and not have to worry about dealing with early flights.

​There will be a couple different options that begin at $169++ which is markedly lower than their regular rates. The booking link will be coming soon. Stay tuned!
