New Beginnings 7
A unique spiritual weekend experience for teens

When: October 8-10, 2004
Where: Camp Mokuleia,Oahu
Cost: $65 per person.
Fee must accompany application with checks made payable to the Episcopal Church in Hawai`i

A Unique Program
New Beginnings is a unique weekend specially designed to respond to the issues, concerns, and needs of teenagers in grades 7, 8, and 9 (mature 6th graders may also attend). The program is designed to help participants grow in their love of themselves, others, and our Lord Jesus Christ.

A Program for Teens
Any appropriate age teen may attend a New Beginnings weekend. Participants do not have to be Episcopalian, but must be recommended through an Episcopal Church and have the backing of an adult sponsor from that church who will be attending the entire weekend.

Accommodations and Cost
Camp Mokuleia is located in Waialua, Oahu. Everyone will be assigned a place to sleep on arriving Friday evening.
You need to provide your own bedding (sleeping bags are preferable), towels, personal hygiene items, and appropriate clothing. Mostly we will be indoors, but there is free time to be outside, so bring appropriate clothing, including a bathing suit and towel and closed toe shoes.

Three meals on Saturday and two on Sunday will be provided. PLEASE EAT BEFORE YOU ARRIVE ON FRIDAY.

The weekend cost will be $65 per person (including adult sponsors and team members) and is refundable only if the weekend is filled or canceled. Please make checks out to the Episcopal Church in Hawai`i. Please enclose the Diocesan Conduct Covenant (signed!) with your registration form. Air reservations will be made upon receipt of your application, signed covenant, and fee. September 3 is the deadline for requesting air tickets.

Sponsors
Every church that sends two or more participants to New Beginnings must send at least one adult sponsor (over the age of 21) with them who has received the Diocesan Sexual Anti-Misconduct Training. The adult sponsor will be responsible for bringing participants to the weekend, serving as a support person to the Family Group Leader during the entire weekend, and then taking the teenagers home at the conclusion of the weekend. Responsibility includes sleeping area and free time supervision. This weekend usually touches each sponsor in a very special way. Because of the importance of the sponsor, no young person’s application will be accepted without a sponsor’s name and address. A follow-up book with resource materials is handed out to each sponsor on the weekend to be used by your church when you return and incorporated into youth programs.

Weekend Format
New Beginnings starts on Friday evening at 6:00 p.m. and continues until Sunday at 2:00 p.m. There are a series of songs, skits, tapes, talks (by youth and adults), and small group discussions. These focus around the following subjects: Self, Friends, Parents, Siblings, School, God’s Love, Prayer, Who Is Jesus, and the Church. There is also lots of time for playing, laughing, creating, exploring, and sharing. Participants will not only learn and grow, but will have the time of their lives!

Bishop Chang will be with us for our Sunday celebration of the Eucharist.

Download complete package of forms here.

Please mail all completed registrations to New Beginnings, Calvary Church, 45-435 Aumoku Street, Kaneohe, HI 96744.

Youth Leadership Cruise: Hawai’i forms leaders in its ocean backyard

Jump 25 feet into sapphire blue water; snorkel among flitting yellow butterfly fish; praise God in a top deck sunrise Eucharist, squinting as light strikes towering, volcanic cliffs; hear the reading of the Gospel of “Bruddah” John; sing and dance to guitar, bongo and ukulele; discuss the hierarchy of needs set out by psychologist Abraham Maslow.

This is a new day for youth and adults in the Diocese of Hawai’i as they work together to form a new leadership network to spark youth and family ministry in the churches across the islands.

Under cloudy skies, but with bright spirits, 22 young people and 14 adults cast off March 22 from the Aloha Tower Marketplace docks in Honolulu on Rapture Marine Expeditions, bound for three days of building awareness for youth ministries in the church and fun activities on the sea.

For four days and three nights the 36 people took part in an unusual offering from the diocese—building leadership skills, learning concepts of commitment, religious faith, and sharing ideas how to spur youth and family participation in congregations.

“We want to get to know each other well enough so we can give support and challenge each other in the ministries we have when we get back home, “ said the Rev. Dr. David Moore, chaplain at Iolani School, member of the planning committee, and the clergy presence on the trip. “We’ll be a stronger group of folk who care about ministry in our congregations, especially ministry about and with youth.”

Ferdinand Cajigal, Good Shepherd, Maui, also on the planning committee, provided lively music leadership, sharing with young musicians as he told the gathering he hoped “to plant a seed that you can take back home.”ome.”

Also on the planning committee were Jenny Wallace, director of Christian formation of St. Andrew Cathedral, who was on the trip, and the Rt. Rev. Richard Chang, who was unable to join the group as he was at a House of Bishop’s meeting in Texas. Keynote program leader was Lisa Kimball, longtime youth leader from Provinces VIII and VI, PhD candidate at the University of Minnesota, and program planner for the 2005 National Episcopal Youth Event. Kimball provided materials and activities which included discussing stages of faith and forming community; conceptual models of youth and family ministry; how we learn; principles of relational ministry; making yourself a leader; and uniqueness of regional and diocesan youth ministry.

Numerous hands-on and group activities moved people around the “salon” level of the boat, where most formative sessions were held.

Adults from across the diocese participated and helped support the spiritual formation and leadership education alongside youth from their churches, while the Rapture crew provided water sports and introduced elements of the Hawaiian sea life.

Traveling on the 150-foot boat with a crew geared to serving Christian youth retreats and presenting programs in marine environmental education to school groups, the event provided safety, security, and a place to stretch the limits in mind, spirit, and physical activity.

The ship moored off the island of Lanai— in Hulopo’e Bay and at southernmost Palaoa Point in the shadow of 1,000-foot lava cliffs.  Here the group snorkeled in bays, kayaked along lava shores and caves, visited the 350-foot high cliff diving site of historic Kahelilis Jump, and the archaeological sites of Halulu Heiau, being researched by the Bishop Museum. While on board all engaged in supervised water activities, jumping off two deck levels, rock wall and rope climbing, and swimming deep blue waters.

“What’s going to happen is totally God inspired,” Kimball told the group as she launched into the four-day program. With music, worship, prayer, study, laughter, full days of water activities, nutritious, plenteous food, and surrounded by supportive adults, it is the hope that the participants in the leadership cruise will return to their churches inspired to be leaders, work with their clergy and lay leaders to jump-start new enthusiasm for youth and family ministries in their midst and across the diocese.
