We opt for conflict avoidance, gloss over individual differences, and speak about others in generalizations to create stability and a “pseudo-community.”  But author Jane Tomaine points out that life itself often happens in those interruptions when we focus our attention on the moment, the person before us, and our perception of what we are being asked to do.
